Chevening Scholarship Mission and Objectives

The mission of the Chevening Scholarship program is to support UK foreign policy priorities and achieve FCDO objectives by creating lasting positive relationships with future leaders, influencers, and decision-makers.
The primary objective of the Chevening Scholarship program is to help achieve the FCDO ambitions and support UK foreign policy aims by forging enduringly beneficial connections with potential decision-makers, influencers, and leaders.
Students with exceptional leadership and influence abilities all around the world are eligible to apply for the Chevening scholarship which allows them to study in the UK. More than 160 countries are supported by the program; the USA (whose residents are eligible to apply for Marshall Scholarships sponsored by FCDO) and most of the EU are among its primary exclusions countries.
Since its launch in 1983, the Chevening Scholarship program has grown to become an internationally recognized and highly competitive international scholarship program. Due to its popularity, additional funding has been contributed; on average, over 1,500 awards are given out.

Chevening Scholarship Benefits

The Chevening Scholarship Program offers a unique program that builds networking among students, alumni, the FCDO, prominent speakers, and partner organizations. Participants of scholarships receive the following benefits:

  • Tuition payment
  • Cost flights via an expressway that has been approved just for you to travel to and from the country of residence
  • A certain amount upon arrival
  • The cost of applying for a visa or clearing immigration just for you
  • A visa for flight departure
  • A maximum donation of £75 for tuberculosis tests, if required
  • An additional stipend for travelling
  • A monthly payment for personal use to pay for accommodation and other living expenses. If you are taking classes in or out of the UK this will affect your monthly stipend. On an annual basis, these prices are evaluated.

Chevening Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

Applicants who do not meet the eligibility requirements will be withdrawn, so before you begin your application, make sure you are eligible. To qualify for a Chevening Scholarship, you have to:

  • Have citizenship in a country or territory that qualifies for the Chevening Scholarship
  • After your scholarship is complete, you must return to your country of citizenship for a minimum of two years.
  • By the time you submit your application, will have completed all requirements for an undergraduate degree that will allow you to be admitted to a graduate program at a UK university.

In the UK, this is typically similar to an upper second-class 2:1 honors degree, however, this may vary according to the course and university you choose. And Have a minimum of 2800 hours, or two years, of working experience.

You are not eligible for a Chevening Scholarship if you:

Hold British or dual British citizenship (unless you are a citizen of a British Overseas Territory or hold BN(O) and are applying from Hong Kong).

Hold refugee status in a non-Chevening eligible country. Applicants who are citizens of a Chevening-eligible country and who hold refugee status in a Chevening-eligible country are eligible for a scholarship.

Are an employee, a former employee, or relative of an employee of Government, or have been within the last two years from the opening of Chevening applications including the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, all British Embassies/High Commissions, the Home Office, the Ministry of Defence, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the Department for International Trade and the UKVI, the British Council, a sponsoring UK university, or a staff member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.
Employees, former employees, or relatives of an employee of Chevening Partner organizations are eligible to apply,
But if the employment took place within the last two years, you cannot receive a Chevening Partner Award from the organization from which you work, previously worked, or are affiliated with through relatives.
Have previously studied in the UK with funding from a UK Government-funded scholarship.
Having a master’s degree does not prevent you from applying for a Chevening Award to study for a second master’s degree in the UK, as long as you can clearly explain why it will help you fulfill your career plan to influence positive change in your home country.
Once submitted, applications undergo an electronic sift against our eligibility criteria. Any applications deemed ineligible will be removed from the selection process and changed it retrospectively.

Chevening Scholarship Application dates

It takes at least eight months from the application deadline to the final selection of candidates for the Chevening Scholarship program.

One Application Only

Withdrawal from the process requires providing a reason, and you can’t start a new application until applications open again next year.
